The NHS COVID-19 app is the official contact tracing app for England and Wales.
The first was commissioned by NHSX and developed by the Pivotal division of American software company VMware.
It is the fastest way of knowing when citizens at risk from coronavirus. The quicker you know, the quicker you can alert your loved ones, and your community.
The app runs on proven software developed by Apple and Google, designed so that nobody will know who or where you are. And you can delete your data, or the app, at any time.
Features of NHS COVID-19 app
It has a number of features:
- Trace: Find out when you’ve been near other app users who have tested positive for coronavirus
- Alert: Lets you know the level of coronavirus risk in your postcode district.
- Check-in: Use our simple QR code scanner to check-in to venues like bars and restaurants. You will get alerted if you have visited a venue where you may have come into contact with coronavirus.
- Symptoms: Check if you have coronavirus symptoms and see if you need to order a free test.
- Test: Helps you order a test if you need to.
- Isolate: Keep track of your self-isolation countdown and access relevant advice.
Available in English, Welsh, Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Gujarati, Polish, Punjabi, Romanian, Somali, Turkish and Urdu.
The app can be used across UK borders in England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Jersey and Gibraltar, detecting all relevant contact tracing app users (regardless of them using different official apps), alerting them if they have been in contact with coronavirus.
The app has been built in collaboration with some of the most innovative organizations in the world.
NHS COVID-19 app & privacy protected
The app cannot personally identify person: It cannot access your phone contacts or any other personal data stored on your phone, such as your name, photos, email addresses or phone numbers.
The app cannot be used by law enforcement: All data in the app is stored on your phone. The NHS and the government do not have access to any of this data and cannot monitor or identify you.
The app cannot track person location: The app tracks the virus and not the person. It does not know where you are or whether or not you are following any advice to self-isolate. The app uses Bluetooth Low Energy to measure how far apart you have been from other app users and for how long.
You can choose to delete your data or the app: You can see all of the data that is stored on your phone and you can choose to delete this data or the app at any time. You do not have to use the app or any of its features, but the more of us who do, the easier it will be to stop the spread of the virus.
